WSH26 INTERSCHOOL

Two days to capture the flag, break the system, crack the cipher, ship the defence.

A two-day interschool hackathon at Westminster School Dubai, open to students across GEMS schools. Two tracks running in parallel, teams of four to six, every machine running Kali.

First come, first served — the first 10 schools to register take part. Each school enters two teams and showcases one project.

01 — The event

Two days. Two tracks. One venue.

Full details→

WSH 26 brings students from across GEMS schools into one building for two days of security work. Teams solve Capture the Flag challenges — exploiting vulnerabilities, reverse engineering programs, cracking cryptographic codes — and build real security software alongside it.

Both tracks run in parallel, so you engage with one or both depending on your skill level. Teams of four to six. Everything runs on Kali Linux.

02 — Tracks

Pick a lane. Or take both.

Both tracks run in parallel across the two days. Enter one or enter both — they are judged independently, so a team running both is competing for two results.

Track 01

Capture
the Flag

Challenges released across the two days on a self-hosted CTFd platform — web exploitation, reverse engineering, cryptography, steganography, forensics, OSINT and wildcards. Beginner, intermediate and advanced tiers. Points per flag, live scoreboard throughout.

Track 02

Hackathon
project

Build something real in cybersecurity — a vulnerability scanner, a secure login system, a password breach checker, a phishing detector, a firewall rule engine, an intrusion detection dashboard. A starter kit ships to every team. Submit by Day 2 and pitch it live.

  • Security focused
  • Starter kit provided

Running both tracks? They run in parallel, so plan your line-up. Teams that split across CTF and the project tend to divide people rather than double output — that is your call to make, and both results are scored separately.

What you need to know

Read the rules→
/ 01
Kali Linux is mandatory
All participants must bring their own laptop and charger. Every participant works from Kali. Bare metal, dual boot, or a VM — your choice, but it must be installed, updated and working before you arrive. There is no setup window on the day.
/ 02
No AI in the CTF, browser AI for projects only
Any AI used during the CTF is strictly prohibited. Browser-based assistants are allowed for hackathon projects only, and local AI agents, offline LLMs and locally deployed weights are prohibited on both tracks. Breaching this disqualifies you from the affected track. Read the policy.
/ 03
First come, first served: 10 schools
Only the first 10 schools to register can participate. Each participating school showcases one project, chosen by the school's computer teacher from its two competing teams. To register, contact your computer science or IT department.
/ 04
Teams of four to six, two per school
Four to six people per team, open to students across GEMS schools. Each school fields two competing teams, and each team declares its track (or both).
/ 05
Two tracks, judged independently
The CTF runs on a self-hosted CTFd instance with a live scoreboard. The project track is judged on the Day 2 pitch. Entering both means two submissions and two results.
/ 06
7:30am to 2:30pm, both days
Doors at 7:30 for setup on each day. Opening ceremony Day 1, awards ceremony at 2:00pm Day 2. See the full schedule.

05 — Platform

The CTF runs on CTFd

Self-hosted, open source, and the industry standard for competitions like this one. Team registration, flag submission and the scoreboard are all built in, which means our effort goes into designing challenges rather than building a platform.

Proven reliability

Battle-tested at scale, with no critical failures during competition.

Full customisation

Challenges, categories, point values and hints fully under our control.
